The key to successful therapy
Research suggests that the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist plays a significant role in the effectiveness of therapy.
We look for psychologists who demonstrate empathy, the ability to build rapport, flexibility, relevant experience, and a commitment to working constructively through challenges that may arise in therapy.
Psychology Melbourne’s Personal Matching Service is based on a comprehensive, independent research study on the impact of matching on the therapeutic relationship. The study shows that matched clients had stronger therapeutic relationships than unmatched clients.
Our Director, Jill Wright, delivered the research paper, “Building the Therapeutic Relationship in Private Practice” at the Australian Psychological Society’s 2014 Annual Conference in Hobart. The paper was reviewed by Associate Professor Felicity Allen from Monash University. A copy of the paper can be found under the link above.
Face-to-face, video or phone matching sessions are available from our CBD office, Monday – Saturday, including after-hours.

What is a personal matching session?
At Psychology Melbourne, we offer an initial Personal Matching session to assess your personal needs and issues and match you with the psychologist most likely to engage with you in a successful therapeutic relationship.
Your Matching psychologist will take into account many factors, including special areas of expertise required, your counselling history, as well as your particular personality and that of the psychologist, increasing the chance that you will form a strong connection
Personal Matching includes online assessment tools and a 30-minute consultation with a psychologist, which may be eligible for a Medicare rebate or private health refund.
During your initial consultation, your matching psychologist will:
- Explain how counselling works and answer your questions
- Explore why you are seeking counselling, your background and history
- Help you set realistic and achievable goals
- Identify which of our psychologists you will work best with
- Following the matching, your psychologist will:
- Provide your matched psychologist with a full background report
- Follow up if there are any problems with the match
Why is it important?
At Psychology Melbourne, we take an individualised approach to matching clients with psychologists, based on a range of personal and therapeutic factors. We have made significant investments in training psychologists in making good matches.
We know that a mismatch between psychologist and client can lead to a client having to begin the process all over again at significant expense and can even sabotage the chances of successful therapy.
Feedback from clients suggests that our matching process often contributes to a stronger therapeutic connection. However, individual results can vary and in the event of a mismatch you will be offered a free rematch to another psychologist.
Face-to-face, video or phone matching sessions are available from our CBD office, Monday – Saturday, including after-hours.
