This course is about setting goals and working consistently with lots of support and feedback to reach your goals. It is not therapy – it is educational and motivational and has been set out over 10 weeks to help you reach your goals.
Therapy is about dealing with your resistance to making positive changes in your life – these can be from a lifetime of negative thoughts about yourself. This group is about moving forward to make those positive changes and understanding what can hold you back.
It takes hard work to achieve the steps you need to take to change behaviour such as losing weight, and group work is ideal for this work.
Each weekly session will be divided into two parts; there will be a component of educational work describing factors that assist or hinder our adaptability, for example, procrastination and self-efficacy and how we operate with these factors.
The second component of each session will be given over to the key features of functional analysis. In this section, participants will be asked to focus on one, carefully defined behaviourally planned and enacted change. Such change would be relevant to someone wanting to stop smoking, exercising more, analysing, and organising business activities, or reduce outbursts of anger when communicating. Throughout the course there will be discussion and group activities.
At the conclusion, the participant will be more confident in making changes and know more about how to be more self-regulating.
Presented by: Clinical Psychologist Terence Bowles has worked in a range of settings including private practice and in university settings. His PhD was on the identification of factors that facilitate change. His university research programs focus on normal and clinical psychological and educational functioning, including change, motivation, achievement, learning, communication, and relationships. His approach as a course presenter is relaxed, engaging, encouraging and supportive. His aim in presenting courses is to hand-over to the participants key ideas and ways to manage their lives better.
