Older adult mental health

How to get started

Find the right Psychologist

Most of our psychologists work in the Melbourne CBD Clinic, and the rest in different locations across Melbourne. You can find out all about our psychologists – when, where and what issues they work with – on our online booking page or you can call our reception on 1300 161 639.

Personal Matching

We recommend that your first step is an online Personal Matching appointment. Research shows that the key to successful outcomes is the relationship between client and psychologist. At Psychology Melbourne, we don't leave that to chance. We offer a personal matching session with one of our trained Matching Psychologists who will expertly choose the right psychologist for you and your issues.

Fees & rebates

GP Referral

All our psychologists are registered with Medicare, allowing clients with a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from their GP to receive a substantial rebate.

Note that you do not require a referral from a GP unless you intend to claim a Medicare rebate.

What are older adult issues?

More and more people are living longer lives and are facing difficulties when they become older adults. With aging, the ability to do daily activities becomes difficult to some degree for every person.

Older people tend to have more disorders and disabilities. But the more prominent concerns for older people are more than just changes in physical health. Social issues including exposure to friends and family, living arrangements and employment often influence poor quality of life for older people.

Research has found that whilst most older adults report good mental health compared to other age groups, one in four older adults experience a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia or dementia.

Anxiety and depression in older people can occur for different reasons, but physical illness or grief and loss can be common triggers.

Other challenges older adults may face include loneliness, existential crises such as a person’s legacy or what their life has meant, boredom and discrimination or inability to work.

Why see a psychologist?

Seeing a psychologist can be an empowering experience for older adults. Speaking to someone and being heard, learning new skills, and gaining tools to improve quality of life can all be benefits of seeing a psychologist as an older adult. It’s never too late to improve your quality of life.

Psychology Melbourne's team of psychologists employ Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and other forms of evidence-based psychotherapy to help challenge or change problematic thoughts, beliefs and behaviours.
